After weeks of wild speculation, the great “Dash Point Toe Mystery” has finally been solved, restoring a sense of serenity to local joggers and an overwhelming sense of relief to area shoe stores.

The drama began when a lone human toe, found perfectly preserved inside a suspicious box beneath a park bench, triggered waves of panic (and sudden interest in foot care products) across Western Washington. Park-goers and amateur detectives flooded online message boards, spinning theories wilder than your uncle at Thanksgiving.

Was it a mob hit gone awry? A cryptic clue left behind by the infamous “Pedicurist Prowler”? Or perhaps just a footnote to a larger, yet-unpeeled onion of mystery?

Authorities have now identified the owner of the toe and the circumstances leading to its dramatic separation. Turns out, the digit belonged to Larry Tompkins, an enthusiastic hiker and even more enthusiastic collector of “weird stories to tell at parties.” Larry, who suffered a regrettable “sandal versus clam” incident last summer, lost his toe in what doctors termed a “freakish intertidal altercation.”

“My doctor said they usually throw amputated parts away,” Tompkins explained from his home, “but I figured–hey, it’s my toe. Why not take it for one last hike before retiring it to the great Croc in the sky?”

Unfortunately, Larry misplaced his keepsake box during snack break and scrambled away, distracted by the promise of a hot dog cart and a discount pedicure coupon.

Law enforcement has declared the park “toe-tally safe” for all visitors, though officials do ask that anyone wishing to bring body parts sticks to the ones they’re currently using and keeps them securely attached.

In related news, Dash Point State Park’s new “Lost and Found” sign now features a single flip-flop and a sign reading, “Better left behind.”
