**Memphis, TN** – In what legal experts are describing as “Groundhog Day with more paperwork,” a judge has ordered a brand new trial for three Memphis ex-officers accused in connection with the 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols. The officers, who have now collected more court dates than frequent flyer miles, expressed relief and confusion—mostly confusion.
“This is a great day for all Americans who believe in due process, as long as it doesn’t involve speedy trials, common sense, or verdicts that stick,” a defense attorney declared while studying travel deals for an extended legal vacation.
Court clerks announced they’d be recycling most of the evidence, snack trays, and at least half the closing arguments from the first go-round. “It’s like leftovers, but justice-flavored,” one bailiff confirmed.
Meanwhile, Memphis residents have begun a charity pool to see which comes first: a verdict, or the city’s new pothole repairs. Odds currently favor the potholes.
Legal analysts expect the retrial to be slightly different, “mostly in the same way a rerun of ‘Law & Order’ is different when you watch it in sweatpants,” said one expert. The courtroom’s vending machine has been restocked, and the Netflix subscription for the jury deliberation room is fully paid up through 2025.
According to court documents, the new proceedings were initiated after someone noticed that in the original trial, the WiFi password for the judge’s virtual background was leaked, casting “unprecedented Zoom shadow” over the judicial process.
The Memphis Police Department says it will support the outcome, or, at the very least, monitor it closely via highlights on TikTok. In the meantime, local citizens are encouraged to observe the new trial respectfully, which means only memes, not flaming hot takes.
Stay tuned for further updates—or until someone finally figures out how to hold a trial that doesn’t end with “To Be Continued.”
