In a move that surprised only those who think “staying” is something reserved for obedient golden retrievers, a U.S. judge has officially rejected Argentina’s request to hit the snooze button on the handover of YPF shares, saying in legalese, “No backsies!” Argentina’s lawyers were reportedly seen frantically thumbing through a worn copy of “How to Stall for Dummies,” but alas, the court was unmoved.

The case, described by legal experts as “the world’s slowest and most expensive game of hot potato,” centers on YPF, Argentina’s beloved oil company/bottomless money pit. After losing a multi-billion dollar lawsuit over the company’s 2012 nationalization, Argentina’s government hoped for a stay on the handover while they brainstormed new ways to avoid paying up—perhaps through interpretative dance or invoking the ancient, mystical right of “We Promise We’ll Pay You Next Week.”

But Judge Loretta Preska, whose patience with Argentina is now rivaled only by people waiting for the next Winds of Winter novel, ruled that the time for waivers, delays, and “one more little extension, pretty please” has passed. In her ruling, she wrote, “Argentina, you can’t take the YPF shares home for just two more weeks. You had enough time—like, years.”

Analysts say Argentina’s legal strategy has now moved to phase two: “Act poor and hope everyone forgets.” In response, government officials have started rebranding the nation as “Just A Bunch of Folks Who Like Soccer, Really,” in an attempt to dodge further notice. Meanwhile, American hedge funds are reportedly organizing a “YPF Share Handover Party,” complete with fake mustaches and empanadas.

At press time, Argentina was seen Googling, “Countries that don’t have extradition with the U.S.” and “How to hide giant stacks of legal paperwork under your mattress.” Stay tuned for more as the world’s longest custody battle over oil shares wages on!
