Across America, bioluminescent insects have proclaimed 2024 as The Year of the Firefly. Yes, thanks to the “Perfect Combo Platter” of steady rain, balmy evenings, and a bumper crop of grass that hasn’t been mowed since March, fireflies everywhere are enjoying what experts are calling the most lucrative light show since your neighbor accidentally programmed his Christmas lights to play AC/DC.

“The conditions are ideal,” reports Dr. Lumen Glo, honorary president of the Firefly Admiration Society. “Moist soil, high humidity, and enough mosquitoes to host a televised cookout. The only ones not thrilled are the local frogs—simply overwhelmed by the buffet options.”

Residents are reporting firefly displays so dense that children are being mistaken for rave attendees after they wander home with glow-in-the-dark streaks on their faces. The bugs themselves have even formed performance troupes, putting on light shows that outshine anything on Broadway or at least in your cousin’s backyard.

Yet not everyone is celebrating. Some homeowners are up in arms after discovering that their expensive patio string lights are now considered “tacky” compared to Mother Nature’s five-star, eco-friendly illumination. “I spent $79.99 on these LEDs!” wailed one aggrieved dad, sipping a warm Diet Coke beneath a literal cloud of glittering beetles. “But it’s the wild bugs getting all the attention!”

Firefly influencers are flooding social media with tutorials on how to synchronize flashing for maximum Instagram engagement. Meanwhile, local authorities warn of possible firefly traffic jams, with drivers distracted by the “sickest bug light show of all time.”

Officials advise patience and perhaps investing in sunglasses—just in case. “At least the fireflies don’t bite,” they remind us. Probably.
