In a powerful moment of international statesmanship, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stunned the world this week when he bravely described recent actions in Gaza as “completely indefensible”—while sitting comfortably in a chair located approximately 8,000 kilometers away in China.

The Prime Minister, who was in China for highly important diplomatic discussions about wine tariffs and whether Australia could maybe get pandas on lay-buy, took a bold stand while simultaneously enjoying dumplings and a Mandarin lesson. “The situation in Gaza is, frankly, indefensible,” said Albanese, as he deftly sidestepped any mention of actually doing something about it and instead offered the most powerful weapon in any politician’s arsenal: strongly worded adjectives.

Political analysts applauded Albanese for wielding the complicated art of “expressing concern,” the cornerstone of modern international diplomacy. “It’s not easy to declare something indefensible from a 5-star hotel in Beijing,” said one expert. “But Albanese did it with style. Wearing slippers, no less.”

Back home, Australians were polled at random to see if they, too, considered the actions indefensible. Most agreed, as long as no one asked them to explain where Gaza is without Google. “I was really moved by his words,” said one bloke from Melbourne, “but to be honest, I thought ‘Gaza’ was a new cricket player.”

Meanwhile, China’s government quietly applauded Albanese’s courageous distanced denouncement. “We, too, find the situation globally concerning,” said a spokesperson, “especially when we are also in the same room as a foreign leader who is very much not addressing our own issues right now.”

Rumor has it Albanese will next declare something “absolutely outrageous” in a hotel lobby in Brussels, provided snacks are present and the WiFi is fast enough for a video call home.
