In what can only be described as a Craigslist version of international relations, Indian police have arrested a man for allegedly running his own embassy, complete with faux credentials, makeshift visas, and—presumably—a very convincing accent. The self-appointed “Ambassador of Nowherestan” operated a full-service diplomatic mission out of a rented flat, offering passports to countries that exist only in the minds of cartoonists and conspiracy theorists.

Neighbors report the consulate flagged suspicions after witnessing a steady stream of hopeful visa applicants clutching paperwork with seals resembling clip art. “We thought it was a legitimate embassy because he wore a suit and used a lot of hand gestures,” said one baffled local. “Also, he had a poster of the Eiffel Tower, which we now realize is just the French embassy’s thing, right?”

According to authorities, the fake embassy offered expedited services, requiring only half the paperwork and less than a third the scrutiny. For the right price, applicants could become honorary citizens of “Borduria” or receive asylum from their mother-in-law’s Sunday dinners. One applicant even recalled being issued a diplomatic passport “with crayon scribbles for security features.”

Police say the man managed to convince dozens of people—including some pigeons—to attend his elaborate “national day” celebrations, which prominently featured bottled water and a ceremonial cheese platter from the corner store.

Officials are now warning the public to be wary of embassies that accept Venmo and offer “Buy-one-get-one-free” visas. The Ministry of External Affairs reminded citizens, “Do not trust any ambassador whose official seal is a rubber duck.”

Meanwhile, the imposter awaits trial, reportedly preparing to declare himself a sovereign nation to avoid prosecution.
