In a bold move that has rocked the world of academic publishing—and left speculative fiction writers fuming—a prominent science journal has pulled a controversial study about a bizarre life form, despite the authors’ passionate insistence that it totally exists, bro.
The study, which made headlines for claiming to have discovered a species “so strange it might not even qualify as a character on Star Trek,” was yanked from publication after peer reviewers found the evidence “lacked credibility, proof, and, honestly, basic biology.” The authors, Dr. Remy Fulgore and Dr. V.B. Smith (no relation), were devastated, insisting the journal’s refusal to stand by their work stemmed only from “a deep-seated fear of the unknown or maybe mild lactose intolerance.”
According to the paper, the new species—*Mysterium incrediblis*—had evolved to thrive solely on diet soda and the ambient frequencies of uncharged iPhones. The creature’s natural habitat included abandoned USB cables and the lost-and-found box at Staples. Illustrations provided in the study showed something that looked suspiciously like the dust bunny under Fulgore’s couch, albeit drawn with more teeth and a crime scene outline.
The journal’s editorial board, while acknowledging “the courage required to publish hand-drawn evidence in the age of Photoshop,” ultimately decided retracting the article was necessary to maintain “the last shreds of scientific credibility.” When asked, one board member stated, “At a minimum, proof of existence should include an actual photo—and not just a blurry screenshot from a vacuum cleaner commercial.”
Undeterred, Drs. Fulgore and Smith have vowed to keep searching for their elusive organism, threatening to release their findings exclusively on Reddit, or possibly at the next family reunion. In the meantime, the vacant spot in the journal has been filled by a safer study: “Is Water Wet? An Ongoing Debate.”
