KYIV — In a dazzling display of democracy, entertainment, and well-practiced sighing, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has unveiled his latest anti-corruption bill to parliament, igniting widespread protests, passionate EU tut-tutting, and a surge in popcorn sales.
“Corruption will no longer have a seat at the table,” Zelensky declared, placing the thick stack of paperwork atop a parliament podium—where it promptly buckled under the weight of unfulfilled promises. “Ukraine is ready for change,” he continued, as lawmakers behind him nervously clutched their offshore account statements.
The bill, reportedly titled “Clean Hands, Cleaner Wallets, Please Stop Yelling at Us,” features innovative anti-corruption strategies such as lie detector yoga, reverse auctions for bribes, and a new agency where officials confess wrongdoing anonymously “just for funsies.”
But even before the ink dried, protesters gathered outside parliament, waving banners that read, “Down with Corruption!* (*Please clarify if we keep our kickback)” and “Don’t Make Us Do Honest Work!” According to sources, many are upset that the new bill will restrict the national pastime of “creative envelope-filling.”
Meanwhile, the European Union chimed in, expressing what they called “profound disappointment” that the legislation doesn’t go far enough. “We had envisioned a strong, European-style crackdown,” said an EU spokesperson. “Or at least a reality TV show about it. Something binge-worthy.” The EU further threatened to withhold critical funds, or worse, to send another delegation of sternly-dressed bureaucrats.
Despite the chaos, Zelensky remains confident. “This bill will make Ukraine a beacon of transparency,” he insisted, before pausing, glancing at his notes, and adding, “Or at least, a country capable of pretending to be one until the next news cycle.”
