In a historic display of international procrastination, China and the United States have reportedly agreed to extend their ongoing “tariff pause” by yet another 90 days during high-stakes talks held in the world’s most neutral territory: Sweden. The news was confirmed by sources with a passion for IKEA meatballs and diplomatic ambiguity.

The tariff pause, described by experts as “an armistice for economists with weak hearts,” will now continue until trade negotiators forget what they were originally arguing about or until someone misplaces the official papers, whichever comes first.

The talks took place in Stockholm, where both sides agreed it’s impossible to wage an angry trade war while surrounded by minimalist furniture and the faint scent of lingonberries. “We found the atmosphere here so disarming,” said one US negotiator. “You just can’t look tough with your shoes off, sitting on a couch named BJÖRKJÄRN.”

China’s delegation agreed, adding, “If we finish the talks early, we get free soft-serve. Who can be aggressive with ice cream in their hand?”

The 90-day extension is expected to allow key negotiators additional time to scan trade documents, binge-watch Swedish crime thrillers, and—most importantly—run out the diplomatic clock so that the next round of talks can be scheduled “when it’s not so chilly.”

In Washington, economists expressed cautious optimism, noting that “every additional day with no trade news is a day global markets can go back to arguing about crypto instead.”

Meanwhile, US farmers and Chinese steel workers are thrilled at the opportunity to keep staring at their inventory in hopeful silence for just a little longer.

Asked if the truce extension marks a lasting peace, a negotiator replied, “Frankly, we’re just seeing how far we can stretch this Swedish vacation before someone notices the minibar charges.”
