A new Canadian study has revealed that surrogates—women who carry someone else’s baby—may be at greater risk of developing mental health issues than women gestating their own little bundle of sleep deprivation. This is shocking news to everyone who thought it would be emotionally simple to cough up a human and then hand it to total strangers in matching “World’s Best Dad” shirts.
Researchers analyzed data from thousands of surrogacies and found that gestational carriers were significantly more likely to experience post-pregnancy mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and, in some tragic cases, an overwhelming urge to only watch Hallmark Christmas movies and eat pickle-flavored ice cream.
Dr. Anna Maybes, lead scientist on the study, explained, “We were surprised to see higher rates of emotional distress among surrogates. Apparently, growing a baby for nine months and then surrendering it is not as relaxing as the glossy brochures at fertility clinics would suggest.”
In response, experts strongly recommended increased support for surrogates, advocating for counseling before, during, and after pregnancy — and maybe free spa treatments or a lifetime supply of dark chocolate. “Honestly, telling someone ‘thank you’ and giving them a $25 Amazon gift card might not be quite enough,” Dr. Maybes admitted.
Surrogacy agencies have already begun brainstorming solutions. Potential interventions range from group therapy led by Dr. Phil impersonators to post-pregnancy getaways at scenic Canadian locations, where surrogates can decompress with moose and maple syrup without anyone handing them a crying baby.
One surrogate, who wished to remain anonymous but would accept gift baskets, shared her own insight: “It turns out hormones don’t really care whose name is on the birth certificate. Also, relatives asking, ‘How’s that baby you gave away?’ isn’t super helpful.”
If only the mental health of surrogates could be delivered as efficiently as the babies themselves.
