NY Times Discovers Star Child’s Health Issues Were a Plot Twist All Along

In a move that the New York Times described as “an unprecedented act of journalistic introspection after an hour on X,” the revered newspaper admitted Tuesday that the emaciated Gazan boy featured on its recent front page had, in fact, been diagnosed with “pre-existing health problems,” including, but not limited to, an intense dislike of broccoli.

The headline, initially reading “Humanitarian Crisis Leaves Gaza Boy Starving,” has since been updated to “Gaza Boy Possibly Hungry, But Also Didn’t Eat Dinner When Asked.” Editors say the shift exemplifies the Times’ dedication to the full context, though not necessarily the full truth.

NYT spokesperson Claudia O’Pinion clarified, “After rigorous fact-checking (two frantic phone calls and a Google search), we learned the boy once refused his grandmother’s matzo ball soup, showing a clear pattern of dietary noncompliance. It would be journalistically irresponsible not to reveal his anti-lentil agenda.”

The correction, printed in size six font between a weather update and a crossword hint, has not stopped critics from decrying the original coverage as misleading. “Next, they’ll claim the Statue of Liberty has a ‘pre-existing huddling’ problem,” fumed one reader, briefly before pelting the Sunday edition with bagels.

Meanwhile, Times editors have vowed to triple-check future cover stories for evidence of previous sniffles, stubbed toes, and emotional baggage. “If the news cycle slows down, we may even consider photos of healthy children, preferably holding kale,” mused O’Pinion.

The Gazan boy at the heart of the story could not be reached for comment, reportedly because he was busy filling out 18 pages of pre-existing conditions for his photo release form.

For now, the Times stands firm in its commitment to nuanced reporting, reminding readers: “In journalism, context is king. Unless, of course, you miss the deadline.”
