PENNSYLVANIA—Morning commuters expecting their usual cup of frustration on I-76 found themselves served a surprise breakfast sausage today when a tractor-trailer carrying ten thousand pounds of hot dogs collided with a pothole, unleashing a meaty migraine across two eastbound lanes.
Officials say the highway quickly turned from “rush hour” into “brat hour” as confused drivers, floating on clouds of meat-scented fog, watched in horror as the processed pork tsunami rolled toward their vehicles. “One minute I’m listening to NPR, and the next I’m surrounded by what looked like a Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest’s aftermath,” said commuter Emily Frankfurter, who claims she “relishes” the experience despite the delay.
PennDOT responded to the scene with their elite “Meat Mitigation Team,” armed with oversized spatulas, brooms, and what appeared to be giant hot dog buns, in an attempt to contain the carnage. “It’s a bit of a jam, literally and metaphorically,” said Sergeant Bratwurst, who admitted they were “ketchup-ing” on reports all morning.
Social media erupted with relish—err, glee—as eyewitnesses posted pictures of emergency crews trying desperately to keep the mustard of order. Twitter user @SausageSavior quipped, “Finally a traffic jam I can sink my teeth into.”
Oscar Mayer released a statement expressing their sympathies: “Our thoughts are with those affected, and we’re grateful everyone is safe. We regret our hot dogs were unable to complete their journey to hungry Pennsylvania residents, but we trust this experience will not sour anyone’s appetite for America’s favorite tube meat.”
Traffic resumed after several hours and 1,200 pounds of sauerkraut deployed for safety (and flavor). Authorities warn drivers to expect lingering “pungent conditions” and hot dog sightings for the rest of the week. The driver was reportedly unharmed, though he says he’ll have “bun-phobia” for the foreseeable future.
