After only 130 years of the world’s most “enlightened” custody battle, the priceless Piprahwa Relics, allegedly containing the ashes of Buddha himself, are finally coming home to India. The long-lost treasure, which was spirited away to Britain with the kind of subtlety usually reserved for a raccoon in a jewelry store, has been returned with all the fanfare of a boomerang that took a gap year.
UK officials presented the relics to Indian diplomats in a solemn ceremony, complete with the awkward smiles of people returning something they “borrowed” in the late 19th century. “You know how it is,” said Lord Dustington-Barnacle, British relic-return specialist. “One minute you’re colonizing the subcontinent, the next you have centuries-old artifacts collecting dust in your museum. Oops!”
Indian officials graciously accepted the sacred urn, though diplomatic sources say the handover was almost postponed after one last British official tried to claim “finder’s keepers” rights. Instead, both sides agreed that international law, not playground rules, should take precedence—at least when being watched.
“It’s a great day for spiritual justice,” said Professor Ashoka Pillai, leading piprahwologist. “And for everyone who’s ever lost Tupperware at a friend’s house and thought, ‘Hope I see that again!’”
Historians say the Piprahwa Relics have traveled more widely than most backpackers, logging more countries stamped in their passport than the average British tourist. As part of the relics’ glorious “homecoming tour,” they’ll spend a week in New Delhi before being returned to their original resting place—assuming anyone can remember where that was.
Meanwhile, the British Museum released a statement clarifying that the return of the relics in no way sets a precedent regarding the Elgin Marbles, the Rosetta Stone, or “any other cool stuff we may or may not have accidentally acquired.”
