In a shocking story that will have shelves — and bowels — trembling, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday they’ve successfully apprehended the suspect in the infamous “Probiotic Pilfering Spree.” The Bay Area man, whose name has not been released but could be Yogurt Dan*, stands accused of stealing a record-setting 21 bottles of probiotics from various health food stores.

Eyewitnesses say the thief was easy to spot. “He moved quietly, but there was definitely a sense of urgency — like someone who knew the power of a healthy colon,” said store manager Amanda Gutierrez. “He only targeted the refrigerated probiotics. Not even a glance at the expired acidophilus tablets on the clearance rack. The man had standards.”

Authorities worked doggedly on the case, posting sketches of the ‘fermentation fiend’ next to the Missing Cat flyers at local Whole Foods locations. “This was a tough one,” admitted Deputy Sheriff Kimchi, “but in the end, we just followed our gut.”

A dramatic arrest unfolded at a kombucha bar in Berkeley, where the suspect was captured, reportedly mid-sip. Onlookers say he attempted to escape by hiding behind a gluten-free baked goods display but ultimately surrendered after realizing gluten wasn’t the only thing he could run from.

When asked about motive, the defendant cited “a desperate need for optimal digestive health” and claimed he had a coupon but “couldn’t wait for the 3-for-2 special.” Word on the street is defense attorneys hope to plea-bargain for community service cleaning abandoned kale gardens.

As for the 21 bottles of stolen probiotics? Authorities confirm they are being safely stored in a cool, dark evidence refrigerator, and several deputies have reported feeling “surprisingly refreshed.”

Justice, like gut flora, will run its course.
