In an effort to prove that journalism really can interview anyone—even individuals who are, how should we put this, ‘absolutely somewhere else’—CNN’s Jim Acosta made headlines this week by sitting down for an exclusive interview with a fully AI-generated avatar of Parkland shooting victim Joaquin Oliver.

“Some say journalism is about asking tough questions to those in power,” Acosta explained to viewers, before adding, “but what about asking tough questions to those not in power, or even not technically present in any legal, moral, or metaphysical sense?”

Reactions were mixed. Some viewers lauded Acosta’s commitment to ‘next-level reporting,’ while others wondered aloud if we should start interviewing AI-generated avatars of George Washington about cryptocurrency or ask virtual Shakespeare for hot takes on climate change.

The AI-avatar, created by merging 14 hours of Oliver’s available Facebook posts with roughly 90% of chatGPT’s entire knowledge of motivational posters, opened the interview with the classic line: “Jim, my purpose is to remind you that AI can generate as much meaning as you’re comfortable believing.”

Midway through the segment, Acosta paused to clarify: “To be clear, this is not actually Joaquin Oliver. This is an advanced, human-sounding simulation of the emotional weight of a national tragedy mixed with trending hashtags, all brought to you by CNN’s marketing department and the future of non-consensual interviews.”

The interview concluded with Oliver’s avatar announcing it was seeking a run in 2028 as the first fully AI presidential candidate, promising to “never forget or be forgotten—mainly due to cloud storage.”

Area viewers, meanwhile, tuned out after realizing this CNN segment felt uncannily like every other CNN segment, except this time the subject couldn’t possibly walk out of the interview.

“At least the avatar didn’t threaten to sue anyone,” Acosta concluded, before turning to prepare his next exclusive: an AI-powered séance panel with the Founding Fathers on TikTok.
