Residents of a quiet California town were left scratching their heads—and their singed lawns—this week after a bird allegedly dropped a perfectly good fish onto power lines, causing a brush fire and redefining the term “hot lunch.”
Local officials report the suspected arsonist is a medium-sized hawk, described as “brownish” with “a criminal record that includes previous air-drops of questionable materials.” The ill-fated fish, innocent of any wrongdoing, was unavailable for comment.
According to Captain Susan Peppers from the County Fire Department, “We’re trained for human-caused fires, lightning, even the occasional gender reveal mishap—but this is our first fish fire.” Captain Peppers went on to confirm that “the power lines sparked after contact with the fish, creating a situation we can only describe as ‘the world’s weirdest seafood bake.’”
Animal behaviorists say it’s possible the hawk’s act was not accidental, as the town’s recent ban on outdoor bird baths has left local avians cranky and looking for revenge. “It’s either that or the bird failed physics class,” one expert speculated.
Utility companies have since issued a new warning: “Please keep both seafood and birds away from all above-ground wires. If you see a bird loitering with sushi, call us immediately.”
