German Court Grants Buchenwald Right to Reject Keffiyeh Fashion Statements

In a verdict that managed to perplex everyone from civil rights activists to literally anyone with an ounce of common sense, a German court has ruled that Buchenwald — the former Nazi concentration camp turned memorial — can legally refuse entry to people wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh. Because when grappling with the horrors of history, the real problem is, apparently, scarf choices.

“We just want our visitor dress code to embody the solemnity of the site,” declared a spokesperson, wearing a “Wurstfest 2024” promotional hat. “Nothing says ‘Never Forget’ like policing neckwear with the scrutiny of an elite fashion magazine.”

The keffiyeh, a checkered scarf closely associated with Palestinian identity, Palestinian culture, and recently teens rebelling against their parents’ taste in scarves, is now considered so controversial that it’s been elevated to the level of “offensive Crocs with socks” — forbidden on sacred ground. “We’ve looked at the evidence,” the spokesperson clarified. “We found a historical photo of someone with a mustache and now anything remotely resembling that era is grounds for banning. Sorry, handlebar club. You’re out too.”

Some visitors expressed relief. “For years, I worried my Bermuda shorts might cause offense,” confessed tourist Dieter Müller. “Now I finally know: it’s the humble keffiyeh causing international incidents. My knees are safe.”

Civil libertarians and irony enthusiasts responded with perplexity, with one asking whether soon all apparel with historical meaning will be prohibited just to be safe. “Should we also ban Adidas, since they provided shoes for Olympic athletes—oh wait, those are still in the gift shop,” mused one visitor.

The court’s next target is reportedly anyone who quotes Yoda within 100 meters of the memorial, as the syntax “disturbs reflective silence, it does.” In Germany’s long-standing tradition of meticulous rule-keeping, it’s safe to say: never again—unless, of course, fashion says otherwise.
